Rushmon Homes Goes Back to School in Woking
27th March, 2008

Rushmon Homes Field Sales Manager John Garrett and Technical Manager Jim Smith were back in the classroom recently at Greenfield School in Woking: and had to answer the questions! The purpose of the visit was to give talks about building to the five-to-seven and seven-to-eleven age groups at the school, something that was enthusiastically received by the children.

The connection with Greenfield School is that Rushmon Homes is currently building on the school’s former location in Constitution Hill, close to the centre of Woking. The school was first established there in 1922, when it was known as Denholm House, changing its name to Greenfield in 1938. The school flourished and expanded, and eventually had to move to larger premises, which it did in 1992. The property was bought by the refugee charity Ockenden Venture, who later sold it to Rushmon Homes for redevelopment as 18 two bedroom apartments and two one bedroom apartments: called Ockenden.

John and Jim spoke to about 150 children in all, explaining how sites are prepared, how buildings are constructed and which materials are used. They talked about the history of the site and also addressed more modern topics such as energy efficiency and conservation. The talk formed part of the school’s science and environmental curriculum, and was followed by a lengthy question and answer session. John Garrett was very impressed by the children’s interest and the intelligence of their questions. Both girls and boys were keen to find out more. For example: how many tiles are there on a house roof? (2-3,000 on average.) And what is the most important machinery on site? (It’s the mechanical digger, without which, digging foundations would be an almost impossible task). One cheeky boy even wanted to know John’s salary! (Answer not recorded!)

The following day the children paid a visit to the Ockenden site and Marketing Suite to see theory turned to practice. The development is well underway, with the second floor just being constructed, and completion expected by the end of the year, so there was plenty to see.

Prospective buyers have something to look at too. The Ockenden Marketing Suite launched in early March, and two plots have already been reserved. All apartments benefit from a high quality specification that includes individually designed fitted kitchens with integrated appliances, and underfloor heating. Prices start at £219,950 for a one bedroom home and £267,950 for a two-bedroom home. And anyone who reserves by the end of April will receive a generous contribution towards their stamp duty of up to £5000.

The Marketing Suite is open from 10am to 5pm Thursday to Monday, telephone number 01483 728400. Interested buyers can also contact agents Waterfall Durrant and Barclay, who are at 44 Commercial Way, Woking, 01483 773773.
